History
At Canvey Junior School, we teach our History curriculum through Primary Connected History (Collins, David Weatherly) as our main programme of study, along with Grammarsaurus for The Egyptians. Plans are provided by the Collins scheme of work and are adapted by teachers to ensure lessons are engaging, effective and support pupil progress. Topics are revisited and developed each year, enabling children to build on prior learning. Pupils of all abilities are supported to develop their skills and knowledge, with increasing challenge as they move through the school.
Each year group studies one History topic per term. This is taught alongside our Geography curriculum, which takes place during the first half of each term. History provides children with an understanding of the past, including significant events, people and societies, and how these have shaped the world we live in today.
Through their learning, children explore their local history and compare it with other periods and civilisations in the United Kingdom and across the wider world.
They learn to interpret a range of historical sources and evidence, while developing key skills such as enquiry, analysis, interpretation, and critical thinking. As their understanding of the past grows, children also develop a sense of chronology and an appreciation of how different cultures and societies have influenced one another over time.
