French
At Canvey Junior School, we teach our French curriculum using the Primary Languages Network scheme of work as our main programme of study. This provides a clear and progressive structure that supports children in developing their language skills year-on-year. Lessons are carefully planned using the scheme and adapted by teachers to ensure all pupils make progress and are appropriately challenged.
French is taught for one hour each week across the school, with a new topic introduced every half-term. This allows children to revisit and build on prior knowledge while developing confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. Topics are designed to be engaging and relevant, helping children to make meaningful connections in their learning.
We use high-quality video lessons to support teaching, meaning children are regularly exposed to accurate pronunciation and intonation from a native French speaker. This helps to develop strong speaking and listening skills, as well as building confidence in using the language in real-life contexts.
Children of all abilities are supported to access the French curriculum and are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning as they progress through the school. Through learning French, pupils develop an understanding of another culture, broaden their global awareness and gain valuable communication skills that will support them beyond primary school.
