Geography
At Canvey Junior School, we follow the ‘Collins’ scheme of work, which is taught through a 1-hour lesson per week for half of each term. The other half of the term History is taught. This can vary during theme weeks, for example during World Week, classes will focus their Geography lessons around a country they have been given. Key Geography skills from the National Curriculum both statutory and non-statutory will still be the main focus of these lessons.
Each year group is provided with a clear scheme of work and a range of resources to support each lesson. This scheme of work ensures all areas of the National Curriculum are covered. The resources available range from maps, pictures, video/audio clips. Through the scheme teachers are provided with background information of the topic along with teaching ideas they could use. Teachers are able to adapt the lessons to suit the children.
At the end of each unit, pupils are then given the Ancillary Question to the topic and answer it to the best of their ability based on their knowledge. Teachers then use this to support them in identifying if a child ARE. Lessons are adapted for the needs of the children to ensure all learners can access the learning objective.
Within each classroom, we ensure there are enough Atlas’, maps and globes for children to access. If teachers require additional resources, then they will talk to the Geography leader to arrange this.
In order to develop and secure the children’s learning and understanding, children are able to participate in school trips both local and further afield. Through these trips, children will have the opportunity to learn more about their local area, read maps, learn more about human and physical features, land usage and many other opportunities.
Within each lesson, children have access to knowledge organisers which asks questions to deepen children's thinking and aid their recall of prior learning. These resources provide a scaffold to learning, which supports children when building upon their skills.
