British Values

At Canvey Junior School, we are committed to actively promoting the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are embedded throughout our curriculum and are reflected in the ethos and daily life of the school.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to inspire pupils while developing their understanding of Britain’s cultural heritage and global influence. Pupils explore key historical events, study significant British artists, composers and inventors and develop an appreciation of the contributions Britain has made to the wider world.

Democracy is promoted through our School Council, where pupils are elected to represent their peers and contribute to decision-making across the school. This ensures that all pupils understand that their voice matters and that they can influence change. Opportunities such as visits to Parliament further deepen pupils’ understanding of democratic processes, which they share with others through assemblies and pupil-led presentations.

We promote the rule of law by ensuring pupils understand the importance of rules and responsibilities, both within school and in wider society. Through clear behaviour expectations, consistent application of policies and curriculum opportunities, pupils learn about fairness, justice and the consequences of actions.

Individual liberty is encouraged by providing pupils with opportunities to make choices, express their views and take ownership of their learning within a safe and supportive environment. We foster independence, resilience and self-confidence so that pupils feel empowered to succeed.

Mutual respect and tolerance are at the heart of our inclusive school community. Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider experiences, pupils learn to value diversity and develop an understanding of different cultures, religions and beliefs. We ensure key events such as Remembrance Day are commemorated and we respond to significant global events to help pupils make sense of the world around them.

We enrich pupils’ experiences through a wide range of educational visits and visitors, including trips to historical sites, castles, gardens and zoos. These opportunities broaden pupils’ horizons, deepen their cultural capital and promote a lifelong love of learning.

Through these experiences, pupils develop not only a secure understanding of British Values, but also the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to become responsible, respectful and active citizens in modern Britain.
