Visit to the Houses of Parliament
What an amazing day our school councillors had on their recent visit to London, to the Houses of Parliament. They were able to visit both the House of Commons and the House of Lords when there were debates taking place. It was amazing to go through the wonderful old buildings, seeing all the statues of previous Prime Ministers, and hearing all about the history of our country. They attended an Educational Workshop called 'Your Voice', which helped them to understand how everyone can make a point and have their opinions heard. They looked at different ways you can organise campaigns, for example; signing a petition, speaking to your MP, through the local or national press or even getting a celebrity involved to back your campaign! Did you know that if a petition gets over 10,000 signatures, it is law that MP's must debate it in the House of Commons. So you can see EVERYONE can have a say in how our country is run.
After the workshop was over, our own MP, Rebecca Harris came to see the children to talk about her work. The children were able to ask lots of questions about her work as an MP.
